After the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the
Department of Homeland Security was created by the Bush administration with sole
responsibility of protecting the United States from both man-made and natural disasters
(Allgovs, 2016). This terrorist attack on the U.S has left many wondering: Why the United
States? As history dictates, the United States has been involved in the affairs of the Middle East
since the 1930s, interventions that have been hotly protested by Muslim writers (Smith, 2010, p.
214). The United States’ Gulf War with the Iraqi government under Saddam Hussein was
another means to fuel the already growing population of Islamic radicals who were bent on
encouraging hatred and violence towards the United States and its allies.
